Breckland League  Five Pairs Competition 09/10

Five Pairs Final hosted by Watton Short Mat Bowls Club on Friday 12 March 2010

Connaught v Wymondham

Connaught ‘A’ lost 36-38 to Wymondham at Watton sports centre on 12th March 2010

The Final was hosted by Watton Short Mat Bowls Club and both teams congratulated the Watton members for the use of their facilities, refreshments and the way they organized the evening, together with the Breckland League committee for their hard work in running the competition.

The Connaught Team Congratulates Wymondham on their five pairs win, it’s healthy for our league that competitions are not always won by the same teams.

Wymondham have lodged a match report on their website to view click on this link http://wymondhamsmbc.co.uk/Breck.aspx.

Well done to our team it was close and with hindsight at times we would all have played different shots, and undoubtedly Wymondham will be thinking the same.

Our report is based on displaying our enclosed match cards copies.

 CONNAUGHT 'A'

CONNAUGHT ‘A’ V CONNAUGHT ‘B’

Connaught ‘A’ played Connaught ‘B’ at Banham in the Five Pairs semi final. The ‘A’ Team won by 49 shots to 32.

First Pair Diana and Bill Adcock drew 8-8 with Ron Madden and Alison Rush.

Second Pair Christine Musk and Sylvia Parsons won 12-2 against Heather Winup and Joyce Hazell.

Third Pair Ty Musk and Ollie Allen lost 8-10 to Peter Hambling and John Winup.

Fourth Pair Derek Liles and Sheila Bragg won 10-6 against Phil King and Alan Marshall.

Fifth Pair Mike Parsons and Ray Wells won 11-6 against Moira Eades and Ralf Ramm.

There is always some nervous tension for both ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams when they play each other, but overall both played well. Although the ‘A’ team won, at several points during games due to excellent shots or unlucky ones, the result could have been different.

In the other semi-final, Watton played Wymondham. In a very close match Wymondham won the match but going into the last three ends the result could have gone either way.

The date and venue has not been set for the final between Connaught ‘A and Wymondham.

Christine Musk and Sylvia Parsons lost 8-9 to K Thomas and M Potter.

Mike Parsons and Ray Wells against E Frary and J Frary *game not played*.

The second round shot difference was close, but Hingham could not match Connaughts home leg 57-23 advantage. With the atrocious winter snow and ice conditions on the roads, Hingham conceded the match.

CONNAUGHT 'A' V HINGHAM

Connaught won at home 57-23 to Hingham in the first round home leg on 1st December 09.

Diana Adcock and Bill Adcock won 14-2

against M Potter and K Thomas.

Christine Musk and Sylvia Parsons lost 7-8

to P Groombridge and J Baker.

Ollie Allen and Derek Liles won 14-2

against P Roache and J Higgs.

Ty Musk and Sheila Bragg won 9-7

against A Marshall and M White.

Mike Parsons and Ray Wells won 13-4

against E Frary and J Frary.

This was a very good first leg  for Connaught Diana and Bill Adcock started the match with a good result and this continued with Connaught’s other pairs. A 34 shot advantage looks good but faster and trickier (to us) mats at Hingham, could make the return match a very close contest.

 CONNAUGHT 'B'

 CONNAUGHT 'B' v CONNAUGHT 'A'

Connaught 'B' lost their semi-final against Connaught 'A' by 32-49 at Banham on Wednesday 10 February.

Alison Rush and Ron Maddern drew 8-8 with Bill Adcock and Diana Adcock.

Joyce Hazell and Heather Winup lost 2-12 to Sylvia Parsons and Christine Musk.

John Winup and Peter Hambling won 10-8 against Ollie Allen and Ty Musk.

Alan Marshall and Philomena King lost 6-10 to Sheila Bragg and Derek Liles.

Ralf Ramm and Moira Eades lost 6-11 to Ray Wells and Mike Parsons.

Although not a slaughter this was an insipid defeat against a Connaught 'A' side which played with more control and which was never really extended. The Connaught 'B' first and third pairs played very well to draw and win respectively in close matches but their other pairs seemed rather overawed by the occasion. Leads lost too many woods and the tactic of drawing for second wood too often was ignored. And technical shortcomings, seen all season on faster and swinging mats, were very evident. Watton v Wymondham on the adjoining mat was a good contest with Watton just bottling it at the end. Good luck to Connaught 'A' for the final; Wymondham will be the bookies' favourite but Connaught 'A' have good pedigree in two-wood pairs. Lastly, many thanks to Banham for being excellent hosts.

CONNAUGHT 'B' V CARLETON RODE

Connaught 'B' won at Home in second legt of the Five Pairs 39-37 giving them a 81-80 overall win by 1 shot.

Pair 1 Alison Rush and Ron Maddern won 19-3 against R & M Baker

Pair 2 Joyce Hazell and Heather Winup won 6-0 This Carleton Rode pair did not play resulting in a 6-0 score to Connaught

Pair 3 John Winup and Peter Hambling lost 5-10 to R & N Davidson

Pair 4 Alan Marshall and Ken Lurcock lost 5-13 to J Davidson and J Brown

Pair 5 Ralf Ramm and  Moria Eades lost 4-11 to T Newby and P Rush

Overall Connaught ‘B’ just shaded it but were not too happy about their performance. Alison Rush and Ron Maddern played brilliantly at both venues but other triples, despite doing well away, did not make the most of home advantage. In both matches Carleton Rode made huge inroads into big Connaught leads and the finish at Connaught was nailbiting. Carleton Rode themselves will not be happy about playing 1 short at Connaught and conceding a mat 0-6. A muddle about travelling arrangements was responsible but it seemed strange that a contacted player then refused to come to Attleborough despite being

offered a lift.
