CONNAUGHT OAK V MUNDFORD ‘A’ AWAY

Connaught OAK won away to ‘Mundford’ A on 14th August 2018 62-43 and 8-0.

Rink 1 Graham Benefer, Jim Squire and Sheila Bragg won 18-17against A Malster.

Rink 4 Pat Benefer, Mike Parsons and Kevin Noble won 18-17 against J Chalk.

Rink 5 Sylvia Parsons, Paul McDonald and Roy Taylor won 26-9 against D Noble.

On Rink 5 Connaught got off to a cracking start leading 16-0 by end five then scored six to Munford’s one to lead 22-1 by end ten. Connaught scored four but dropped three over the next six ends to lead 26-4 by end sixteen. Connaught then took the foot of the pedal and dropped five over the last two ends to win 26-9. This was a very convincing win with all three playing well. As this block were the first to finish it was now up to the other two blocks to do the business and, as you will see, their games were a lot closer.

On Rink 1 Connaught took an early lead of 7-2 by end 6 but then dropped eleven over the next six ends whilst only scoring a two on end eight to be down 9-13. Connaught scored six to Mundford’s three by end sixteen to be only one behind going into the last two ends. Connaught lost end seventeen by one but scored a marvellous three on the last end to win by one shot 18-17. Well done, good bowling by all three players, especially Jim who got stung by a bee part way through the game. Ends were shared at nine each.

On Rink 4 An even start to this game being 5-5 after six ends. Connaught scored ten whilst only conceding a one to lead 15-6 after 11 ends. Mundford then scored ten to Connaught’s three by end seventeen to cut our lead to 18-16. Connaught held two early on in end eighteen but Mundford’s skip reduced this lead to one with his second bowl but could do nothing with his last and Connaught won 18-17. Connaught won eight ends. Well done to all of you especially as this was the last rink to finish and we needed either a 7-1 or 8-0 win for us to overtake Mundford and finish in second place in the league. A marvellous finish to the season.

By the time you read this report I, hopefully, will have had a successful operation on my spine. Obviously, this means I will not be bowling, or at the club, for a few weeks I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the Ashill teams for their support this season and all others for their good wishes. Roy

CONNAUGHT OAK V ASHILL AT HOME

OAK won at home to Ashill on 7th August 2018 69-33 and 8-0.

Connaught went into their penultimate game of the season down to the bare bones with four of our squad doing other things. However, we did manage to put together three strong triples and this point was proven when we won all three games to record our first 8-0 win of the season.

Rink 1 Graham Benefer, Sheila Bragg and Owen Secker won 29-10 against J Pleasant.

Rink 2 Pat Benefer, Jim Squire and Paul McDonald won 17-11 against B Smith.

Rink 3 Roy Taylor, Pam Smith and Mark Watson won 23-12 against B Hall.

On Rink 1 Connaught started well and mid-way were 14-4 ahead. Their good form continued scoring fifteen over the last nine ends to win 29-10. A great performance all round. Connaught won twelve ends.

On Rink 2 Steady start by Connaught to lead 11-3 by end eight. They dropped six over the next four ends to have their lead cut to 11-9. Connaught then scored six to Ashill’s two over the final six ends to win 17-11. A good steady performance. Connaught won eleven ends.

On Rink 3 An even start to this game with the score tied at 7-7 at the half-way point. Connaught then took control by scoring twelve over the next four ends to lead 19-7. Connaught scored a one and a three to Ashill’s five over the last five ends to win 23-12. A good all-round performance on difficult rink 3, especially by Mark Watson who had sadly lost his father that morning. Well done. Connaught won eleven ends.

Congratulations to John Overton and his Elm squad for winning Division 4 of the Ashill mixed triples league. Well done to you all.

CONNAUGHT OAK V SHROPHAM AT HOME

Connaught OAK won at home to Shropham on 31st July 2018 57-42 and 6-2.

Rink 1 Pat Benefer, Kevin Noble and Mark Watson22-12 against T Cursley.

Rink 2 Sylvia Parsons, Roy Taylor and Paul McDonald lost 13-17 against K Tingey.

Rink 3 Mike Parsons, Pam Smith and Owen Secker won 22-13 against L Hammond.

On Rink 1 Connaught started well and were 8-1 ahead after five ends. Their good form continued and they led 17-4 by end 10. Shropham then made a bit of a comeback scoring eight to Connaught’s one over the next six ends to reduce Connaught’s lead to 18-12. They scored two on each of the last two ends to win 22-12. Well done all of you but especially to Mark who played exceptionally well. Connaught won eleven ends.

On Rink 2 A good start by Connaught who were leading 5-1 by end five. Shropham scored seven to Connaught’s three over the next five ends to be level at 8-8.  Shropham were leading 11-9 by end 13. On end 14 Connaught were holding 5 with one wood left for Shropham. The Shropham wood took a double wick to the jack which took another wick to three of Shropham’s woods, a turn round of eight shots. A similar situation occurred on end seventeen when Connaught were holding six and with his last wood the Shropham skip wicked onto the jack to score one. Connaught were very unlucky to lose 17-13. Connaught won eight ends.

On Rink 3 An even start for both team with a score of 3-3 after five ends. Connaught score seven to Shropham’s three over the next five ends to lead 10-6. Shropham raised their game and scored seven over three ends to lead 13-10. Connaught got back into gear scoring twelve over the last five ends to win 22-13. Well done. Connaught won ten ends.

Connaught then hit form and won four of the next five ends to lead 13-10. They were stuck on ‘unlucky’ thirteen for four ends to go 13-16 down with two ends left. Connaught hit form again scoring one then five to win 19-16. A good team performance by all three players – well done. Connaught won nine ends.

On Rink 2 The game started evenly and was 4-4 after end five. Connaught then proceeded to drop seven over the next three ends to go 4-11 down. Both teams scored three over the next five ends and the gap remained the same at 7-14. Connaught scored seven on the next two ends to draw level at 14-14. Unfortunately, their good form did not continue as they dropped seven over the next two ends and scored one on the last end to lose 15-21. Connaught won eight ends.

On Rink 3 A good start for Connaught who won three of the first six ends to go into a 9-4 lead but then got stuck on nine for the next seven ends conceding 11 to go 15-9 down after thirteen ends. Northwold continued their good form scoring eight to Connaught’s three over the final five ends. Connaught lost 23-12 and won six ends.

Rink 2 Graham Benefer, Sylvia Parsons and Paul McDonald won 26-11 against T Cator.

They dropped three over the last three ends and scored one to win 15-13.Connaught won nine ends.

On Rink 2 A good steady start by Connaught winning five of the first seven ends to lead 13-3. They then dropped six on the next two ends to see their lead to drop to 13-9. Connaught recovered well to win eight of the final nine ends scoring thirteen to the Magpies 2. A convincing 26-11 win with all three team members playing well. Well done. Connaught won thirteen ends.

On Rink 3. The game started evenly with both teams scoring four after five ends.Connaught then lost the next six ends to go 4-11 down. They shared the next five ends scoring four points each with Connaught still trailing by seven. The last three ends went totally awry with Connaught dropping 11 to lose 8-26. Connaught won six ends

It was disappointing to draw 4-4 as, going into the last three ends we were seven shots ahead, then only scoring 6 to Magpies 14 to lose overall by one point. In  the current league this means the Magpies have drawn level on points with us in third place but we have a slightly better +/-. However, those two extra points could have seen us vying for second spot.

CONNAUGHT OAK V MUNDFORD AT HOME

Connaught OAK won at home to Mundford on 26th June 2018 60-47 and 6-2.

Rink 4 Roy Taylor, Pam Smith and Sheila Bragg won 24-11 against D Noble.

On Rink 5 A slow start by Connaught who were 2-16 down by end eight. They scored a terrific six on end eight and seven more over the next three ends to pull the score back to 15-17. They dropped one on the next end but then scored a brilliant four on end fifteen to lead 19-18.  scored one on end 16 to level the game at 19-19. Connaught then scored a single and a two on the last two ends to win 22-19. Well done – a fantastic recovery. Connaught won nine ends.

On Rink 6 Another slow start with Connaught going 0-6 down after three ends. They recovered well to go into a 12-6 lead by end 11. Unfortunately, they could not maintain this form and only managed to score two over the last seven ends losing 24-17. Connaught won ten ends.

All Connaught players played well considering Mundford came to us unbeaten and had only dropped five points out of a possible thirty-two this season.

On Rink 4 Connaught won the first end by one, the only time they would lead. They managed to score five more by end ten but Ashill had scored eight to lead 8-6. Ashill then scored twelve over the next eight ends to win 20-8 mainly due to Ashill’s skip, Colin Breeze, by either drawing to the jack when required or taking out any Connaught holding woods – more of a hurricane than a C Breeze. Connaught won seven ends.

On Rink 5 Connaught started well with a five on the first end and by end 11 were 14-5 ahead. They then let it slip a little and were one down going into the last end but managed to score a three to win 19-17. Well recovered. Connaught won nine ends.

Rink 2 Catherine Branch, Jim Squire and Sheila Bragg lost 13-22 against S Bedingfield.

Rink 3 Sylvia Parsons, Roy Taylor and Kevin Noble won 22-13 against T Horne.

On Rink 1 A very even game from start to finish with no more than two shots separating the teams throughout the game. Connaught scored three on end 17 to go one up but could not hold on to their narrow lead with Northwold taking one on the last end to earn a very creditable draw. Connaught won 7 ends.

On Rink 2 Connaught never really got going only scoring six by end ten to Northwold’s 13. They scored 7 to Northwold’s ten over the last eight ends to lose 13-22. However, Sheila’s block was last to finish and needed 2 on the last end to tie the match overall. Connaught were one up when Sheila, with her last wood, went in with weight, picked up the jack taking it into the ditch to score the 2 Connaught needed. Well done. Connaught won seven ends

On Rink 3 Connaught dropped a 4 on the first end but were leading 11-9 by end 10 but by end 14 were one down at 12-13. Connaught then took the last four ends with two, six, one and one to win 22-13. Connaught won 12 ends.

They recovered by scoring 14 to Magpies 1 over the next seven ends to lead by 20-17. Magpies replied by taking the last two ends scoring three to draw the game 20-20. An entertaining game enjoyed by both teams even though it was a ‘bit’ chilly. Both teams won 9 ends.

On Rink 2 Connaught started well and led 5-1 by end three but Magpies then scored 13 to Connaught’s 1 over the next ten ends to lead 14-7. Connaught replied with 7 to Magpies 1 over the next four ends and were one behind going into the final end. Unfortunately, they dropped two on the last end to lose 14-17. A creditable performance by Connaught considering they scored their 14 points from only six ends.

On Rink 3 Connaught started well scoring six over the first two ends then dropped 17 over the next four ends to go 6-17 down.  Connaught came back and scored 11 to Magpies 1 and were 17-18 down after 12 ends. However, Magpies scored four on ends 13 and 14 to lead 22-17. Connaught retaliated by scoring a one and a two over the next two ends to come back to 20-22. Magpies won the last two ends but Connaught restricted them to only one on each of the last two ends to lose 24-20. A good fighting performance by Connaught having dropped 17 in four ends early in the game. Both teams won 9 ends.

CONNAUGHT OAK V WYMONDHAM DELL

Connaught Oak won at home to Wymondham Dell on 15th May 2018 52-43 and 6-2.

On Rink 1 Paul’s triple started strongly to take a 12-3 lead by end 6. They continued to play well and won 4 of the next 6 ends to lead 18-3. The last six ends were shared - 3 each with the Dell scoring 6 and Connaught 5 to take the final score to 23-9.
Well done on a good all-round performance. Connaught won 12 of the 18 ends.

On Rink 2 Paul’s triple had a good start with a 4 on the first end but were pegged back to 5-4 by end5. They won 3 of the next 5 ends to lead 11-7. Once again Wymondham Dell pulled back and by end 15 Connaught only had a 1-point lead at 15-14. Connaught dropped a single on end 16 to level the game at 15-15. Connaught scored 2 on the next end but dropped 1 on the last end to win 17-16.
Well done on a good all-round performance in a very tight game. Connaught won 8 of the 18 ends

.
On Rink 3 there was a game of three parts. By end 5 the score was 2-2 with a no-scoring end. Connaught then took control and by end 12 they had a 12-4 lead. Then the wheels did really fall of the Connaught bus! Wymondham Dell won the13th end and shortened the mat and went on to win the next 5 ends scoring 12 to win the game 18-12. It is hard to believe that with 45 bowls Connaught could not even manage to get a second wood.
Better luck next time.
