CONNAUGHT A v GISSING B

Connaught won 4-1 and 45-32 at home against Gissing B on 2 August in a match restricted to 16 ends because of inclement weather.

RINK 2 S.Barclay, D.Flatt, R.Taylor and M.Utting won 17-7 against G.South.

RINK 3 G.Benefer, G.Li-Rocchi, R.Harrison and O.Secker lost 12-14 against A.Thompson.

RINK 4 P.Macdonald, R.Oatway, M.Watson and M.Parsons won 16-11 against K.Fulcher.

On rink 2 Mick Utting's block had a close contest over the first 6 ends and established a 4-2 lead. A run of 6 winning ends saw them take a commanding 16-2 lead. Their lead was reduced towards the end but they still ran out comfortable winners.

On rink 3 Owen Secker's block were 5-11 down after 11 ends but recovered well to finish only 2 shots down.

On rink 4 Mike Parsons' block established a healthy 14-4 lead by end 10. Gissing fought back but Mike held on to the finish 5 shots ahead.

A wet, gloomy night for bowls but a sunny result. The 4 points gained may be enough to replicate "The Great Escape" for Connaught A.

 

CONNAUGHT A V WYMONDHAM

Connaught lost 1-4 and 55-65 away to WYMONDHAM on 24 July

RINK 2 P.Hambling, K.Noble, M.Watson and M.Parsons lost 16-33

RINK 3 G.Benefer, K.Ramsbottom, R.Harrison and O.Secker lost 17-19.

RINK 4 D.Liles, S.Barclay, R.Taylor and M.Utting won 22-13.

 

CONNAUGHT A v SHOTFORD

Connaught lost 1-4 and 48-74 away to SHOTFORD on 26 July.

RINK 2 D Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting lost 15-33 to S Ayres.

RINK 3 G Benefer, G Li-Rocchi, R Harrison and O Secker lost 12-28 to S Bartrum

RINK 4 P Hambling, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons won 21-13 against D Ashfield.

On rink 2 Mick Utting's blocks were 3-18 down after 9 ends. A good run brought the score back to 12-18, but they were unable to maintain this effort and fell away again, to finish 15-33.

On rink 3 the story was similar, with Owen Secker 1-8 down after 4 ends. Some sporadic success followed but they were never able to get closer than 9-15 and finished 12-28.

On rink 4 Mike Parsons' block kept in touch early in the match and they were level after 5 ends. They then won 7 of the next 8 ends and established a lead, 18-7 by end 15.From then on it was a matter of containment to secure 1 point, as the news from the other rinks was not good.

This was not the result we had hoped for but, as always, the Connaught team gave it their best shot, both in application and spirit

CONNAUGHT A v DISS A

CONNAUGHT A lost at home to DISS A 0-5 and 45-92 on 19 July.

RINK 2 G Benefer, G Li-Rocchi, R Harrison and O Secker lost 13-30 to K Baker.

RINK 4 D Liles, K Ramsbottom, R Taylor and M Utting lost 17-39 to E Feaveayear.

RINK 6 P Hambling, K Noble, M Watson and M Parsons lost 15-23 to A Stimson.

On rink 2 Owen Secker's block were 0-10 down after 3 ends and never recovered, slipping further behind despite a few good ends, to finish 13-30.

On rink 4 Mick Utting was involved in a high scoring match. His block scored a 6 on one end but suffered adverse scores of 2x5, 1x4 and 5x3 on other ends, to finish 17-39.

On rink 6 Mike Parsons' block were level with Diss at the half-way stage but then dropped 6 on end 11. This proved decisive because the remainder of the match was fairly even.

Connaught won 5-0 at Diss earlier in the season but Diss well and truly turned the tables in this return fixture. Their 92-45 win could well be described as significant

CONNAUGHT A v WYMONDHAM B
CONNAUGHT won 4-1 and 55-54 at home against WYMONDHAM on 5 June.
RINK 2 K Ramsbottom, G Li-Rocchi, D Flatt and O Secker lost 11-23 to G Bidwell.
RINK 3 P Hambling, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons won 21-14 against D Richmond.
RINK 4 D Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting won 23-17 against A Gaze.
On rink 2 Owen Secker's block was well in contention at 9-12 after 12 ends. Unfortunately, they won only 2 of the next 9 ends and went down 11-23.
On rink 3 Mike Parsons' block held a commanding lead 17-3 after 12 ends. A dropped 5 on end 13 changed the complexion but they held on to finish 7 shots ahead.
On rink 4 Mick Utting's block was 12-5 up at one point but the loss of 5 successive ends put them behind 12-14. A late rally got them in front again and a 4 on the last end proved decisive in the overall context of the match.
This match was so close; it went to the final end. Mike Parsons' block was last to finish and as they started their 21st end the score stood at 54-54. Fortunately they picked up 1 shot to get over the line

RINK 6 R Harrison, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons lost 12-20 to S Thompson.

The end game once again proved vital. Connaught went from a position of being all square after 17 ends, to 12 shots down after 21

CONNAUGHT A lost at home to NORFOLK BOWLS CLUB on 21 June by 0-5 and 43-69

RINK 2 P Hambling, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons lost 14-23 to C Willgress.

RINK 3 D Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting lost 17-26 to C Wells.

RINK 5 G Benefer, K Ramsbottom, D Flatt and O Secker lost 12-20 to C Boon.

CONNAUGHT A won 4-1 and 68-59 away at GISSING B on 14 June

RINK 2 R.Harrison, G.Li-Rocchi, D.Flatt and O.Secker won 28-15 against D.Wood.

RINK 4 D.Liles, S.Barclay, R.Taylor and M.Utting won 23-20 against A.Thompson.

RINK 5 P.Macdonald, R.Oatway, M.Watson and M.Parsons lost 17-24 to R.Knights.

On rink 2 Owen Secker's block matched Gissing over the first 7 ends. A 5 on end 8 gave them a lead which they gradually increased to 21-8 by end 15. This lead was maintained to run out 28-15 winners.

On rink 4 the teams were evenly matched and tied at 8-8 after 9 ends. Two poor ends put Mick Utting's block 8-15 down but they fought back, winning 7 of the next 10 ends, including a 5 on end 17. Mick finished on 23-20.

On rink 5 Mike Parsons' block had a difficult night and were 9-23 down after 18 ends. However, a 6 on end 19 proved to be very important in the overall context of the match, which was edged by Connaught 68-59.

After 16 ends, Connaught were 8 shots down overall and looking at a 1-4 scoreline. Fortunately, a late rally turned things around and Connaught finished 4-1 ahead.

CONNAUGHT A v SHOTFORD

Connaught lost at home to SHOTFORD on 7 June by 1-4 and 44-61

RINK 2 P Macdonald, R Harrison, M Watson and M Parsons lost 15-22 to D Ashfield.

RINK 3 .Liles, S Barclay, K Ramsbottom and R Taylor lost 9-20 to S Bartrum.

RINK 5 G Benefer, G Li-Rocchi, D Flatt and O Secker won 20-19 against T Chuter.

On rink 2 Mike Parsons' block looked in control at 10-4 after 10 ends. At 14-12 after 16 ends, they were still firmly in contention, but a poor run of ends saw them drop 10 shots and go down 15-22.

On rink 3 Roy Taylor's block were in a low scoring match. Most of the ends were won by single shots but 7 of the final 9 went to Shotford and this was enough to see them home.

On rink 5 Owen Secker's block had to stage two fight backs. They recovered from 0-10 down after 6 ends and again from 13-18 down after 17 ends, to finally win 20-19 with 3 shots on end 21.

A slow start by Connaught saw them 14 shots down overall after 6 ends. Even though they maintained parity for the remainder of the match, the poor start on home territory was costly.

CONNAUGHT A v DISS A

Connaught won 5-0 and 75-44 away at Diss on 31 May.

RINK 3 G Li-Rocchi, G Benefer, D Flatt and O Secker won 29-13 against K Baker.

RINK 4 D Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting won 22-17 against F Feaveryear.

RINK 5 .McDonald, R Harrison, K Ramsbottom and M Parsons won 24-13 against M Howard.

On Rink 3 Owen Secker's block went into an early lead and sustained the pressure throughout the match. At 21-13 after 19 ends the score seemed comfortable and a 7 on end 20 finally nailed it.

On Rink 4 Mick Utting's block dropped behind at the start but then won 9 of the next 10 ends to go 18-4 ahead. At 21-9 after 16 ends things looked rosy, but never underestimate Connaught for drama. A late wobble saw Mick going into the
final end only 4 shots up, but nerves held and he ran out 22-17.

On Rink 5 Mike Parsons' block had a tough match and did well to keep pace with Diss and go ahead 12-7 after 10 ends. At 17-13 after 18 ends the match was still finely balanced but a 3 and a 4 on ends 19 and 20 saw them home comfortably.

This 5-0 win at Diss put the ability of the Connaught team into a better perspective, following 3 successive losses.

CONNAUGHT A v DICKLEBURGH

Connaught lost at home to Dickleburgh on 24 May by 1-4 and 47-57

RINK 3 P McDonald, K.Ramsbottom, M Watson and M Parsons won 19-13 against A Green.

RINK 4 Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting lost 11-21 to P Wright.

RINK 5 R Harrison, G Benefer, G Li-Rocchi and O Secker lost 17-23 to E Rawthorne.

On Rink 3 Mike Parsons' block were always ahead after a flying start. They reached 19-7 after 15 ends and although losing the last 6 ends, managed to contain the opposition to 1 shot per end.

On Rink 4 Mick Utting's block struggled to stay with Dickleburgh and were 6-19 down after 16 ends. A slight recovery towards the end showed a touch of their normal form.

On Rink 5 Owen Secker's block played well and looked comfortable at 16-12 after 15 ends. Unfortunately, a dropped 5 on end 18 turned the game around and they never recovered, going down 17-23.
This match stressed the importance of the end game. After 15 ends, Connaught were 4 shots up overall and seemingly heading for a 4-1 win. A total of 14 shots dropped on the last 6 ends turned that into a 1-4 loss.

RINK 3 S Barclay, K Ramsbottom, R Taylor and M Utting drew 18-18 with E Fairweather, I Allen, R Cornwall and M Coe.

RINK 4 P Macdonald, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons won 18-11 against D Last, M Jolly, G Forster and P Forster.

RINK 5 W Adcock, G li-Rocchi, O Secker and D Flatt lost 14-33 to S White, G Rodgers, J Harrison and S Thompson.

On rink 3 Mick Utting's block won only 8 ends but managed to get a very good draw. This was due to the fact that they contained Gissing to single or double shots on losing ends. The match was 8-8 after 8 ends, 13-13 after 15 ends and 14-18 after 19 ends. Mick did well to get 4 shots on the last 2 ends, for the draw.

On rink 4 Mike Parsons' block were behind for the first 7 ends but then managed to get ahead. From then on, they stayed in front in a close game and pulled away over the last few ends to finish 18-11.

On rink 5 David Flatt's block dropped 6 on the first end and were 0-27 down after 11 ends. They finally got on the scoreboard on end 12 and from then on, played well to finish 14-33 with a 5 on end 21.

Well done Mick Utting and Mike Parsons' blocks for gaining 1½ points against Gissing A. This is always a difficult fixture and Connaught can be well satisfied with the overall result.

Connaught A lost away to Norfolk Bowls Club B on 3-5-17 by 0-5 and 38-83

RINK 1 P McDonald, R Oatway, M Watson and M Parsons lost 11-27 to A Johnson, J Leslie, K Brooks and C Wells.

RINK 2 D Liles, S Barclay, R Taylor and M Utting lost 16-28 to C West, M Ollis, C Knights and C Willgress.

RINK 3 G Benefer, G Li-Rocchi, D Flatt and O Secker lost 11-28 to K Whitehead, A Morter, S Wells and C Boon.

On Rink 1 Mike Parsons' block went 0-6 down after 5 ends but held their own over the next 9 ends, getting to 9-16. Their opponents proved too strong for the remaining ends but Mike will be satisfied with the overall performance of his block

On Rink 2 MIck Utting's block played well and were in contention at 13-16 after 14 ends. As is often the case however, the constant pressure from strong opposition finally told and Mick finished on a very respectable 16-28

On Rink 3 Owen Secker's block kept in touch with NBC and were only 8-12 down after 12 ends. They lost the next 7 ends and finished down 11-28.

This first match of the season, away at NBC, was always going to be difficult. Not only have NBC won the league for the last two seasons, they are considerably stronger this year with 3 of their members moving down from the 'A' team. The score line 0-5 and 38-83 fairly reflected the difference in strength of the two teams. On the positive side, all 3 Connaught blocks battled hard on a cold, dull evening and remained competitive for a good part of the match. The four members of the squad who have moved up from the 'B' team, Graham Benefer, Roy Taylor, Joe Li-Rocchi and Mark Watson all settled in well and were not daunted by the higher level of bowls.
