Connaught 116 VPs 90

Some good bowling was seen on a fast green in good weather for bowling. One or two curios. Terry Shoebridge did all the admin for the VPs but turned out for Connaught (incidentally playing at 3 in Connaught’s best winning rink!)

On Rink 1 Mike Parsons was pitted against Bill Windsor and Barry Sayer and not far away, on Rink 3, was John Winup. The link was that all four were regular opponents or teammates in the county squash leagues, quite a few years ago now. All remain very competitive, albeit more sedately nowadays! Word has it that Barry Sayer had a superb game at lead for the VPs.

The captains’ Rink 3 saw Connaught 13-14 down after 19 ends but then snatch 2 and 3 for a narrow win. Tony Foulke played magnificently at skip for the VPs in this game.

Rink 5 saw Owen Secker’s Four 1-12 down after 9 ends but losing only one end after that. What did they put in the drinks?

A most enjoyable post-match meal followed with John Winup and Tony Foulke presiding over the formalities. Toasts were drunk, thank yous said and presentations made. Very amusing for Connaught members to see Geoff Randle, club coach, receive a “Bowling Wrong Bias” certificate from Tony. “Always check your stickers” says Geoff to his charges every Saturday morning.

Mick Utting, Connaught Chairman, made a special presentation of flowers from the Club to Sandra Adcock for her organisation of catering throughout the season. It is always a pleasure to welcome the VPs to Connaught. The bowling is keen but friendly and they are good company. As they do at every club they visit they also ensure that they support the home club at bar and raffle. For our part we try to be sociable and hospitable hosts.
