EBA B Team Table 10 8 2017

Connaught 'B'lost at Wortwell on Wednesday 2 August by 32-55 and 0-5 in a match reduced to 18 ends by agreement

Rink 2 John Overton, Colin Barton, Brian Matthews and Phil Wilson lost 14-15 against R Hadingham
Rink 3 George Sheridan, Barry Westwood, Trevor Burt and Michael Marlow lost 7-22 against J Taylor
Rink 4 Mike Minshull, John Winup, Richard Adcock and David Quadling lost 11-18 against G Hunter

A good showing on Rink 2 where all played well and John in particular had a fine game. 5-12 down after 12 ends Connaught stormed back to win 5 of the last 6 with a shots aggregate of 9-3 but Wortwell just held on

The match on Rink 3 was affected by MIchael Marlow gaving to withdraw after about 5 ends on account of pains etc in his legs. Fortunately he was OK afterweards. Michael is a tremendous club servant always prepared to play anywhere at any time but he must put his health first. The Connaught 3 fought hard but were always up against it

Rink 4 was disappointing because Connaught led 9-2 after 8 ends in very damp conditions and still led 11-9 after 14 ends. A dropped 4 on end 15 wasa fatal and they lost the last 3 ends. A strange
match in which everybody had good and bad woods in difficult conditions. Wortwell had that bit more on the long jack

Terry could not play owing to last-minute illness and Trevor Burt showed good club spirit in stepping in. A fragmented season in Div 2. Only 6 sides with the late withdrawal of Wymondham 'C' and Scole such a strong side obviously going to win the title. With Graham Benefer, Joe Li-Rocchi and Roy Taylor moving to the 'A' squad and with Chris Haylock giving up the game, Connaught lacked quality and experience even at this level. Re-group next season - the club at least should have the numbers

Connaugh home match on 26th July against Diss B not played. No shots or points awarded to Connaught or Diss B

Connaught ‘B’ lost at home to G W Staniforth 'B' on 2512th July 2017 by 57-63 and 2-3

Rink 4: Phil Wilson, John Moss, Trevor Burt, George Sheridan v D Leigh

Unfortunately with 8 squad players missing this was always going to be a difficult game for us. George drew the short straw being drawn against their strongest rink and after a poor start it only got worse. Score 5 - 32

Rink 5: David Quadling, Richard Adcock, John Winup, Mike Minshull v L Robinson

We kept this rink together hoping that they would win the game overall for us. Unfortunately a disappointing final six ends, losing 9 shots to 2 cost us dearly. Perhaps we should have done better but at least we won the rink points. Score 26 - 22

Rink 6: Mike Marlow, Dennis Branch, Barry Westwood, Terry Shoebridge v D Kay
Despite having to change the rink again, a really strong performance saw us win comfortably. The rink played very well and only lost 5 ends. A disappointing final end saw us drop 3 shots which could have been the difference in the score overall. Score 26 - 9

Once again the lack of regular back end bowlers cost us dearly and was probably the difference between winning and losing

Connaught ‘B’ won at home against Long Stratton on 28th June 2017 by 55-55 and 3-2

Rink 1: Phil Wilson, Trevor Burt, George Sheridan, John Overton v D. Baker
John’s rink has been changed virtually every week, but apart from last week his rink has performed very well. After a slow start they settled down and a very good middle section saw them ten shots ahead after 15 ends, eventually winning by 6 shots. Score 23-17

Rink 2: Barry Westwood, Barry Osborne, Colin Barton, Terry Shoebridge v R Harvey
This game was close throughout with never more than 4 shots in it. With all players from both sides playing well the game could have gone either way but we managed to hold on to win by 3 shots. Score 17-14

Rink 3: David Quadling, Richard Adcock, John Winup, Mike Minshull v R. Webster
Mikes rink were probably unfortunate to draw their strongest rink and the opposition were always in control of this game. After 10 ends we were 9 shots behind, but to their credit they improved in the second half and managed to keep the deficit to 9 shots. Score 15-24.

General: After last week’s poor and unacceptable performance it was good to see the team knuckle down and manage to draw with a strong Long Stratton team. Last week we had a bowling lesson and we obviously learnt from that and seemed to bowl far better. A mention to Steve Barclay, I thought the green bowled very well despite the amount of rain that fell over the last few days.

Connaught ‘B’ lost away at Scole on 25th June 2017 by 36 – 91 and 0– 5

RINK 2: David Quadling, Richard Adcock, John Cinup, Mike Minshull v N. Bell
After a promising start, winning the first 5 ends the team held their opponents until the 15th end when the score was level. Unfortunately we lost 5 of the final 6 ends and eventually lost by 8 shots. Score 15 - 23.

RINK 3: Brian Matthews, Phil Wilson, Terry Shoebridge, John Overton v D. Aldous
We were never in this game from the first and to the last. The rink was tricky but that cannot be used as an excuse for the way we played. The opposition were very experienced and deservedly won the game comfortably. A very poor performance by us and we need to improve quickly, otherwise we will get a few more thrashings. Score 8 - 38.

RINK 4: Barry Westwood, Barry Osborne, Colin Barton, George Sheridan.
Another rink that were very disappointing and were not likely to win from early on. We were 13 shots behind half way through the game but at least we held our own in the second half. Once against not good enough overall but Scole will probably win the league this year and deservedly so. Score 13 - 30.

Connaught ‘B’ won at home against Wortwell on 14th June 2017 by 63 – 58 and 3– 2

Rink 1: David Quadling, Richard Adcock, John Winup, Mike Minshull v R Hadingham
John suggested that Mike should play at Skip as he was bowling very well at the moment. This certainly paid dividends with all four playing extremely well throughout the game. With the overall result being very close, scoring a 5 on the last end won the game for us. Won 35 - 9

Rink 2: Barry Westwood, Colin Barton, Jim Squire, George Sheridan v G Smith
This game was very close and was level after 16 ends. We then dropped 8 shots on the last 5 ends eventually losing by 6 shots. A disappointing final score but a reasonable performance overall. Lost 14–20

Rink 3: Phil Wilson, Brian Matthews, Terry Shoebridge, John Overton v J Taylor
After a steady performance in the first half of the game, our performance fell away in the second half. We were leading by 5 shots after 12 ends, but losing the last nine ends was not acceptable. We eventually dropped 20 shots over that period and deservedly lost that rink and almost the game overall.

This performance was not good enough and we need to improve quickly. Lost 14-29

DATE 7 June 2017 Result 61-59 and 4-1

Rink 1 David Quadling, Richard Adcock, Mike Minshull, John Winup v D Grogan
An excellent performance by John’s rink with David and Richard playing very well out bowled their opposition throughout the game. Mike and John did their bit then required ensuring a successful evening for the team. Won 22–12

Rink 3 Mike Marlow, Phil Wilson, Colin Barton, Terry Shoebridge v P Kidd
An acceptable performance by the rink although we nearly threw it away at the death. After going 10 shots ahead after 14 ends, we lost our way in the last throw of the game but managed to hold on to win by 4 shots. Won 23-19

Rink 5 Barry Westwood, Brian Matthews, Jim Squire, George Sheridan v D Leeder
George’s rink were unfortunate to be drawn against probably their strongest rink and the opposition seemed to improve as the game went on. We only won one of the last 8 ends although most of them were by one shot, which enabled us to hang on for a very close but deserved overall victory. Lost 16-28

Date: - Wednesday 24th May 2017 against G.W. Staniforth

Venue: - Away

Result: - Lost 0 - 5 Shots 55 - 66

Rink 4 David Quadling, Richard Adcock, Mike Minshull, John Winup v L. Robinson
After making changes from our previous game, John’s rink came very close to winning but 11 shots against 1 in 3 ends towards the end of the game proved very costly Lost 18 - 22

Rink 5 Phil Wilson, Brian Matthews, Colin Barton, John Overton v D. Kay
Just as rink 4 we had a costly six ends towards the end of the game. Losing 8 shots to 1. Despite John Overton playing very well again at skip and picking up 4 shots on the last end, they just fell short, but once again the team came close but not quite close enough. Lost 19 – 21

Rink 6 Mike Marlow, George Sheridan, Barry Westwood, Terry Shoebridge v R. Beatty.
With a completely different team Terry’s rink were very disappointing and the score after 12 ends told the story. After winning the first end, we won only 2 of the next 11 ends resulting in the score being 21 – 3 down after 12 ends. But we dug in and kept trying and won 8 of the final 9 ends to finish on the losing end by just 5 shots. A very good finish to the game but not good enough in the first half.

A real game of two halves. Once again, overall, the performance was not quite good enough. The 5 – 0 scoreline tells the story. We do need to improve, but at the moment we are struggling. Score 18 – 23.

Date Wednesday 10th May 2017 away against Long Stratton

Venue: - Away

Result: Lost ½ - 4 ½ Shots 42 - 74

Rink 2 David Quadling, Barry Westwood, Richard Adcock, Terry Shoebridge v R. Harvey
We started very slowly but one or two good or lucky woods kept us in the game early on. The opposition No 3, playing with multi-coloured woods, had a brilliant game and actually got better as the game went on. Despite playing well we tailed off at the end, losing by 9 shots 12 – 21

Rink 3 Mike Marlow, George Sheridan, Mike Minshull, John Winup v R. Webster
We started well going 4 – 0 up early on but by half way we were 11 – 8 down. It looked like we were holding our own against strong opposition, but a poor second half of the game was the reason for the final score. In John’s own words very disappointing and not good enough. Lost 12 – 35

Rink 4 Phil Wilson, Barry Osborne, Colin Barton, John Overton v D. Baker
A tight game from start to finish end in probably the right result. Despite going six shots behind after 13 ends we managed to finish strongly. We won 6 of the final 8 ends culminating in a 3 on the last end to draw the game. Another very good game at skip by John Overton saw us draw the game. Score 18 – 18.

Connaught lost at home to Scole on Wednesday 3rd May 2017 by 50-55 and1-4

Rink 1: David Quadling, Barry Westwood, Richard Adcock, Terry Shoebridge lost 17 – 21 against D. Aldous

Rink 2: Phil Wilson, Brian Matthews, Colin Barton, John Overton list 16-18 against R. Frostick

Rink 3: Mike Marlow, George Sheridan, Mike Minshull, John Winup won 17 – 16 against G. Vernon

Against a strong Scole team it was always going to be difficult to get anything from the game. To get as close to them as we did was a creditable performance and we probably deserved more. A lack of recognised back end bowlers at this level showed and I personally had a problem with my back which meant I struggled to reach the head far too often.

Hopefully things will improve for me personally and for the team overall and if we continue to play as we did then we could have a reasonably good season.
A big thank you to Steve and his team who prepare the green. After last season’s problems they have produced an excellent playing surface which as the season goes on will no doubt improve even more.
