CONNAUGHT A v SCOLE
CONNAUGHT A won 4-1 and 75-52 at home against SCOLE on Wednesday 31 July
RINK 1 G.Benefer, R.Taylor, K.Noble and M. Watson won 30-18 against S.Bartram.
RINK 2 D.Liles, J.Horslen, R.Harrison and M.Utting lost 16-20 to V.Buckle.
RINK 3 M.Minshull, O.Secker, K.Bartlett and M.Parsons won 29-14 against D.Aldous.
On rink 1 Connaught raced away to 11-0 after 4 ends. They then stopped for breath and Scole recovered to 14-14 after 10 ends. Fortunately, Connaught gained a second wind and finished strongly at 30-18.
On rink 2 Connaught had a poor start going 2-10 down after 8 ends. A good recovery saw them 12-10 up after 13 ends but the loss of the next 5 ends put them 5 shots down, just too much to pull back.
On rink 3 a great start for Connaught saw them 20-2 up after 8 ends. Then came a mid-life crisis, losing 6 of the next 7 ends. Fortunately, the losing ends were mostly singles and a jump start saw them comfortably home by 15 shots.
This was a must-win match for Connaught, to ensure division 1 status for next year. Their response was first class and the resulting 4-1 win completely reversed the disappointing loss at Scole just 2 weeks earlier. So ends another nail biting EBA season.
CONNAUGHT A v G.W. STANIFORTH
CONNAUGHT v GISSING
CONNAUGHT A v SCOLE
CONNAUGHT A v LONG STRATTON
CONNAUGHT A won 5-0 and 71-41 at home against LONG STRATTON on 8th July.
RINK 1 D. Liles, J. Horslen, J. Overton and M. Utting won 32-12 against R. Webster.
RINK 2 W. Adcock, O. Secker, M. Parsons and P. Macdonald won 21-16 against K. Staff.
RINK 3 M. Minshull, R. Taylor, K. Noble and M. Watson won 18-13 against B. Searle.
On rink 1 Connaught had a wobbly start, going 5-2 up after 3 ends and then 5-9 down after 7 ends. From that point on, they took control and won 12 of the remaining 14 ends, finishing 20 shots ahead.
On rink 2 Connaught had a remarkable match, at least on the scoring. They raced into a 10-2 lead after 5 ends and then seized up. They lost 11 ends in succession to reach 10-14 after 16 ends. In a normal game this would have been fatal but of the 11 lost ends, 10 were to single shots and 1x2. This enabled a strong finish, winning 11-2 over the last 5 ends. To sum up, Connaught won only 8 ends but finished 21-16.
On rink 3 Connaught were always ahead but not comfortably so. After 16 ends the score was 13-10 but nerve held, and tight bowling saw them home 18-13 with ends divided 11-10.
This was an important win for Connaught to get them off bottom position in the league. Although they have games in hand, due to bad weather cancellations, those games need to produce points on the board to be of any value.
CONNAUGHT A lost 1-4 and 63-66 to DISS A at home on 3 July.
RINK 1 M.Minshull, R.Taylor, K.Noble and M.Watson lost 21-24 to E.Feaveryear.
RINK 2 D.Liles, J.Horslen, R.Harrison and M.Utting won 21-20 against O.Allen.
RINK 3 R.Broad, O.Secker, M.Parsons and P.Macdonald lost 21-22 to K.Baker.
On rink 1 Connaught were well placed at 18-13 after 15 ends but a run of 5 losing ends put them well behind, despite 3 on the last end.
On rink 2 Connaught were 12-2 up after 7 ends but seized up and did not score again until end 16, when they were 12-7 down. A late rally however saw them over the line at 21-20.
On rink 3 Connaught were 14-7 up after 12 ends but dropped 15 shots over the next 7 ends. They came back well but finished 1 shot down at 21-22.
The match was similar to that away at Diss: close on shots overall but still 1-4 down on points. Connaught played well and at one stage looked as if they might win, but Diss proved to be the stronger.
RINK 3 R.Broad, O.Secker, M.Parsons and P.Macdonald lost 16-22 to P.Smith.
RINK 4 G.Benefer, R.Taylor, K.Noble and M.Watson won 22-9 against B.Searle.
On rink 2 Connaught had a tightly fought contest and were down 6-7 after 9 ends. A winning run of 7 ends put them 16-7 ahead and they were able to maintain this lead over the last 5 ends.
On rink 3 Connaught had a promising start with 5 on end 1 and 4 on end 6 and a lead of 13-6 after 8 ends. Unfortunately, they won only 3 of the next 13 ends scoring 3 shots to 16 against.
On rink 4 Connaught had a solid performance after a slow start, 3-3 after 6 ends. They won 6 of the next 7 ends establishing a 13-4 lead after 13 ends. This increased to 22-9 by the finish.
A good result for Connaught and much needed points on a cold June evening.
CONNAUGHT A lost 0-5 and 39-77 away to GISSING on 5 June
RINK 2 D. Liles, O. Secker, R. Harrison and M. Utting lost 9-27 to P. Forster.
RINK 4 J. Squire, R. Taylor, M. Parsons and P. Macdonald lost 11-25 to M. Coe.
RINK 5 G. Benefer, J. Horslen, M. Minshull and K. Noble lost 19-25 to S. Thompson.
On rink 2 Connaught were 0-15 down after 7 ends. They played much better for the remainder of the match but never gained any ground.
On rink 4 Connaught were 5-2 ahead after 6 ends but won only 3 of the next 15 ends and were left well behind.
On rink 5 Connaught performed well and were only 1 shot down, 18-19, after 16 ends. The match slipped away over the last few ends but was still keenly fought.
Connaught were outplayed by Gissing and came away with nil points. This was disappointing in the light of the two earlier away fixtures against Thetford and Diss, when Connaught lost by a narrow margin.
RINK 1 R. Broad, J. Horslen, R. Harrison and M. Utting won 32-12 against A. Gaze.
RINK 2 G. Benefer, R. Taylor, K. Noble and M. Watson lost 14-25 against D. Richmond.
RINK 3 K. Bartlett, R. Oatway, M. Parsons and P. Macdonald won 29-14 against K. Guy.
On rink 1 Connaught were 5-6 down after 7 ends. They then got into gear and won 10 of the next 14 ends, finishing with 2x3.
On rink 2 the Connaught block were left at the starting gate, going 1-17 down after 11 ends. A good recovery saw them get to 14-18 after 18 ends and a possible victory in sight - but a poor finish left them 14-25 down.
On rink 3 Connaught were level 4-4 after 6 ends. A good run of ends saw them up 15-7 after 14 ends but a dropped 4 allowed the visitors to close up to 15-11. A strong finish, including a 6 on the last end, gave a comfortable win of 29-14.
A good 4-1 win in the end but the match was even at the mid-way stage. Fortunately, rink 2 recovered some lost ground to support the winning rinks
RINK 1 D.Liles, J.Horslen, M.Minshull and M.Utting lost 13-19 to K.Baker
RINK 4 G.Benefer, R.Taylor, O.Secker and M.Watson won 24-12 against E.Rawsthorne
RINK 5 K.Bartlett, J.Squire, M.Parsons and P.Macdonald lost 12-23 to E.Feaveryear
On rink 1 Connaught were 9-8 up after 10 ends but were only able to pick up four singles over the next 11 ends, losing in a tightly fought match 13-19.
On rink 4 Connaught were 4-4 after 5 ends but then scored 3,5,2,1 to go 15-4 up. This margin was maintained for the rest of the match in a first class performance by Mark Watson’s block.
On rink 5 Connaught were well in contention at 9-11 after 14 ends but flagged over the run-in picking up only 3 shots to 12 by Diss.
A good all round performance by Connaught but only 1 point gained. When the 21st end started Connaught were only 1 shot down overall but could not get over the final hurdle.
