Fine weather greeted players and spectators for what turned out to be a good day’s bowling and a very pleasant social gathering afterwards.

Ashill played Diss on Rinks 1, 2 and 3 in the main contest, to determine the winners and runners-up. Diss prevailed by 64-51 (M Howard 23-21 v A Willer, R Frostick 28-9 v R Hall, E Rawsthorne 13-21 v C Breeze). The big win by R Frostick’s strong-looking rink, with David Harrison at lead, proved conclusive. Ashill battled hard in the two other matches, with Alan Willer coming very close against Mike Howard’s triple and Colin Breeze taking the last 6 ends against Eric Rawsthorne for an excellent win, but were not going to make up the overall shots difference.

In the match to decide 3rd and 4th places the hosts, Connaught, received something of a drubbing from Bradenham who won by 65-51 in a very similar score to that in the adjacent match (G Rosher 19-22 v S Bragg, R Parry 24-11 v M Parsons, J Pleasant 22-18 v M Utting). Also similar was the pattern of two close matches, in which the scores almost cancelled each other out, and one sizeable win.

Afterwards the players and guests eagerly patronised the bar and then settled down to a lovely buffet supper prepared by Sandra Adcock and Marianne Liles

John Winup, Connaught President, welcomed the visiting captains and their teams and thanked everybody for bringing raffle prizes. He congratulated Alan Willer from Ashill on being President-elect for Norfolk next year. He thanked particular Connaught members for the organisation, namely Sandra and Marianne for the catering, Bob Oatway for running the bar, Joan Knox for doing the raffle and Steve Barclay, with the club’s greenkeeper, for the work on the green.

John then drew especial attention to the sponsors of the Invitation Shield, Bill and Diana Adcock and Marjorie and Vernon Plumpton, and said that without their financial support the competition could not be run in its present form. He also drew attention to Bill and Diana’s 56th wedding anniversary. He said that a collection box for the Norfolk Zipper Club would be passed round and mentioned that 12 August was the anniversary of a second dramatic journey to Papworth Hospital for Mick Utting.

Visiting captains all said a few words and the four sponsors then made the presentations to the captains. Connaught received a cheque for £25, Bradenham a cheque for £50, Ashill a cheque for £75, and Diss the Shield itself and a cheque for £150.

The Annual Invitation Shield saw Ashill, Bradenham, Connaught and Diss in competition in the Semi-Finals on 29 July 2017

On Rinks 1, 2 and 3 Bradenham found it rather hard going against Diss who won on all three rinks with a final score of 86 shots to 35.

Rinks 4,5 and 6 saw a much closer game, with 3 ends to go Connaught held a slight advantage but Ashill came on strong to win a very competitive game 2-1 with a shot score line of 68-48.

The afternoon ended with an excellent buffet and raffle. The Finals will be on the 12 August 17 at 2:30pm
